Google Business Profile: The Complete Setup Guide for Israeli Businesses

The Most Powerful Free Marketing Tool You Are Probably Not Using

Walk down any commercial street in Tel Aviv, Haifa, or Jerusalem and you will see businesses that have been operating for years with no Google presence at all. No reviews. No hours. No photos. Sometimes not even a verified profile. Their competitors, who took 20 minutes to set this up correctly, are getting called every week from people who searched for exactly what that business offers.

Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is the tool that controls how your business appears when someone searches on Google Maps or types your category plus location into Google Search. It is free. It takes less than an hour to set up properly. And once it is done, it generates inquiries without any ongoing ad spend.

This guide walks through setup, optimization, and the specific things that separate profiles that rank well from profiles that sit invisible.

Who This Is For

Any business with a physical location or a service area benefits from Google Business Profile. Plumbers, clinics, law offices, restaurants, cleaning services, construction contractors, tutors, beauty salons. If your customers are within a specific geographic area, this tool is for you.

For Russian-speaking business owners in Israel who built their client base through referrals and community networks, Google Business Profile is often the first step toward getting found by people outside that immediate circle. It is how you grow beyond who you already know.

Step 1: Claim or Create Your Profile

Go to business.google.com and sign in with a Google account you control. Search for your business name.

If a profile already exists, Google may have created it automatically from public information. Claim it. If no profile exists, create one from scratch.

This first step matters: an unclaimed profile can have incorrect information, no photos, and no way for you to respond to reviews. Once you claim it, you control everything.

Step 2: Complete Verification

Google needs to confirm you actually operate from the address you listed. For most businesses, this means receiving a postcard with a 5-digit verification code, which takes 5-14 business days. Some businesses qualify for phone or video verification, which is faster.

Do not skip this. An unverified profile does not appear on Maps and has very limited search visibility.

Step 3: Fill In Every Field

This step is where most businesses underperform. They fill in the name, address, and phone number, then stop. That is not enough.

Business name: Exactly as it appears on your official documents. Not "Best Electrician Tel Aviv" but "Cohen Electrical Services." Google penalizes keyword stuffing in business names and it can result in your profile being suspended. Primary category: Choose the most specific option available. "Electrician" not "Contractor." Google uses this to decide which searches to show your profile for. You can add secondary categories later. Description: You get 750 characters. Use most of them. Describe what you do, who you serve, and what makes you different. Include your city or neighborhood naturally. Write in the language your customers search in, which for most Israeli businesses means Hebrew, but if you serve English or Russian speakers, consider which language they actually use when searching. Hours: Accurate hours, including special hours for Jewish holidays. If someone tries to call during Sukkot and your hours are wrong, the negative review writes itself. Phone number: Use the number people will actually reach someone on, not a fax or old line. Website: Link to your actual website. If you do not have one, this is a gap worth addressing. Services: Add every service you offer as a specific item. Google surfaces businesses in searches for specific services when those services are listed in the profile.

Optimization That Actually Moves the Needle

Photos Drive Clicks

Businesses with 10 or more photos receive 35% more website clicks and 42% more requests for directions than businesses with fewer than 10 photos. Real photos, not stock images.

Upload photos of your storefront or office from the outside, so people can recognize it when they arrive. Photos of the interior. Photos of your team at work. Photos of your finished work or products. Update these every few months.

For restaurants and cafes, food photos are critical. For service businesses like cleaning or renovation contractors, before-and-after photos are extremely effective.

Reviews Are the Ranking Signal You Can Actually Influence

Google's Maps algorithm weighs three things: relevance (how well your profile matches the search), proximity (how close you are to the searcher), and prominence (how established and trusted you appear). Prominence is the only one you actively build.

Reviews drive prominence. A business with 40 reviews at 4.7 stars outranks an equally relevant competitor with 8 reviews at 5.0 stars in nearly every test.

Build a simple habit: after any positive interaction with a customer, send them a WhatsApp message with a direct link to leave a Google review. You can generate this link directly from your Google Business Profile dashboard. The message can be as simple as: "Thank you for choosing us. If you have a moment, a review on Google really helps us. Here is the direct link:" and then paste the URL.

Respond to every review, positive and negative. Google rewards active profiles. For negative reviews, respond calmly, acknowledge the issue, and offer to resolve it. Do not argue. Do not ignore.

GBP Posts: Free Visibility Most Businesses Skip

Your Google Business Profile has a posts feature that almost nobody uses. You can publish updates, offers, events, and new service announcements. These appear directly in your Google Search listing.

Post something once per week. An announcement, a tip, a seasonal offer, a completed project. It takes five minutes and signals to Google that your profile is active and maintained. Active profiles rank better.

What Determines Your Maps Ranking

Google is explicit about the three factors that determine local search ranking.

Relevance is how closely your profile matches what someone searched for. Complete profiles with accurate categories and services rank more relevantly than incomplete ones. Distance is proximity to the searcher. You cannot move your business to rank for this. What you can do is optimize for the searches where your location is competitive. Prominence is how well-known your business is. This is built by review volume, website links pointing to your business, your website's own authority, and your presence in other directories. For Israeli businesses, being listed on Zap, B144, and relevant sector directories all contribute to this.

The Mistakes That Hold Businesses Back

Inconsistent NAP data. Your Name, Address, and Phone number must be identical across your website, Google profile, and every directory where you appear. "HaYarkon 50" on Google and "50 Hayarkon Street" on your website looks like two different businesses to search algorithms. Pick one format and use it everywhere. Ignoring the Q and A section. Anyone can add questions to your profile, and anyone can answer them. If you are not monitoring this, competitors or uninformed users may be answering questions about your business incorrectly. Check it monthly and add your own FAQs proactively. Setting it up and forgetting it. Profiles that go months without activity, no new photos, no posts, no review responses, gradually lose ranking to more active competitors. Fifteen minutes per week is enough to keep a profile current.

Getting Your Website Found Alongside Your Profile

A well-optimized Google Business Profile is more effective when it links to a website that Google also respects. Fast load times, mobile optimization, clear service pages with location-specific content. If your website is on Wix or another platform with known technical limitations, those limitations affect how much trust Google extends to your business overall.
