Selling on Etsy or Facebook? Why and How to Move to Your Own Store

Your Business Lives on Rented Land

If you sell on Etsy, eBay, Facebook Marketplace or any other platform, you have a business. But you do not have control. The platform decides who sees your products, how much you pay per sale, and which rules change tomorrow morning without warning.

It works as long as it works. But business owners smart enough to build sales on a marketplace are smart enough to know it cannot stay that way forever.

When Is It Time to Move?

You have 50+ sales per month. If the marketplace is delivering consistent sales, there is real demand for your product. Your own store will keep more of the profit with you. Fees are eating your margins. Etsy takes 6.5% plus processing fees. eBay takes 10-15%. On 100,000 shekels in annual sales, that is 6,500 to 15,000 shekels going to the platform. In your own store, the only fee is payment processing (1.5-2.5%). You want to build a brand. On a marketplace you are just another seller. In your own store you are a brand. You can build a unique experience, collect an email list, and talk directly to customers. The platform changed rules and sales dropped. It happens. Algorithm change, terms update, fee increase. If this already happened to you, that is the best reason to diversify.

How to Make the Transition (Without Losing Sales)

Step 1: Do Not Leave the Marketplace

This is the biggest mistake. Do not close Etsy the day you launch a store. Run both in parallel. The marketplace keeps bringing traffic while you build your independent presence.

Step 2: Build a Store That Is Ready to Sell

You do not need to copy 500 products on day one. Start with your 20-30 best sellers. Make sure the photos are professional, descriptions are solid, and the checkout is smooth. Read our guide on online stores for more details.

Step 3: Funnel Traffic from the Marketplace to Your Store

Every marketplace order is an opportunity. Put a business card in the package with a link to your store and an exclusive offer. Add a link in your marketplace profile. Email existing customers if the platform allows it.

Step 4: Build an Email List from Day One

This is your most important asset. Every customer who buys from your store goes on the list. Every visitor who signs up for the newsletter goes on the list. Email marketing is the most profitable channel and with your own store you have full control.

Step 5: Invest in SEO

The marketplace did SEO for you (and charged you for it). Now you need to build your own organic presence. SEO for small businesses takes time but the results are yours forever.

What Does It Cost?

A professional online store starts at 8,900 NIS at ETW. That includes custom design, product catalog, payment processing, inventory management and a checkout experience that converts. Compared to 10,000+ NIS per year in marketplace fees, the investment pays for itself within a year.
